Travel Tip

If you visit in June, Lisbon’s Festas de Lisboa fills the streets with music, sardines, and decorations. It’s chaotic in the best possible way and worth planning around.

Recipe Tips

Meal Prep Friendly: Make a larger batch and store in the freezer for quick & easy meals throughout the week. It reheats well and can be a lifesaver on busy days.

Experiment with Herbs: Don’t hesitate to experiment with different herbs and spices like thyme, bay leaves, or cloves to create your unique pickle flavor profile.

Makes for a Great Gift: I love giving Homemade pickles as gifts! Package them in decorative jars with personalized labels for a thoughtful and tasty present.

we wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment

  • Alfama — the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, winding and hilly and full of fado houses. Go in the evening when the light is golden and the music starts drifting out of open doors.
  • Chiado — elegant, literary, and full of good coffee shops and independent bookstores. This is where I always end up spending more time than planned.
  • Mouraria — the most multicultural neighbourhood in Lisbon, with some of the best food in the city. Don’t miss the Intendente square on a warm evening.
  • Belém — technically a suburb but unmissable. Home to the Jerónimos Monastery, the Tower of Belém, and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery. Get there early.

  1. Book Sintra palace tickets in advance — they sell out, especially in summer
  2. Avoid Tram 28 if you’re not a tourist attraction person — it’s beautiful but packed
  3. Eat lunch at a local tasca for the best value in the city
  4. Learn a few words of Portuguese — locals genuinely appreciate the effort
  5. The best viewpoints (miradouros) get busy at sunset — arrive 20 minutes early
  6. Carry cash — many smaller cafés and bakeries don’t accept cards
